Today’s [Rockstar]
The 1970s and 1980s were a period called the golden age of rock music. Numerous rock stars, including Queen, appeared in England, and an era of romance began in Korea with bands such as Sanullim and Songolmae.
I wanted to capture the appearance and current appearance of a person who debuted at a time when rock music, a purely foreign music, began to be imitated through various attempts. At first, I looked around Nakwon Shopping Mall, but it didn't look natural. While I was thinking about it, I received a message from Kim Byeong-gil, whose father I once photographed, that he was recruiting vocal trainees at his live cafe. I contacted him right away and on Friday evening, I visited “Dolce,” a live club run by my father.
Even though they were busy, they welcomed me warmly. I was momentarily taken aback by the live club I had been to for the first time in my life, and when I saw someone who appeared to be my father sitting there, I asked him to sing a song on stage. (It turned out that he was not a guest, but a student raised by my father.) After his performance, my father took up the guitar and asked, “Is there a song you want to hear?” Naturally, I requested Kim Gwang-seok's song, and my father sang it beautifully. I had no idea what it would be like to go to a live club like this, but I was able to enjoy the moment.
After that, I was able to take pictures and listen to my father’s story at various places in the live club. My father is a singer-songwriter who formed the duet group “To Heaven and Earth” in 1979 and debuted with “Flowers That Bloomed for You,” and continued to work on his music. And after opening a live club, he said that he is still making music himself and at the same time training his juniors.
He looked at me and said, “Taking pictures isn’t easy, but it’s nice to see you working hard,” and cheered me on by taking out his CD and signing it. I also said thank you and left.
